Movie Monday

Every Monday evening, I would make my way down to Science Theatre 148, where the student union will play a movie, free for students, $2 for outsiders. AND many outsiders do come to watch! I guess its because there aren't many cinemas in Calgary(at most 5) and $2 is quite cheap.

The movies they screen are quite recent and very nice (so far). Last week was Wallace and Gromit, one of the best animations I have ever seen. Today, I just watched March of the Penguins. Its supposed to be a documentary, but it seems like a work of art to me. The way the penguins march to their mating ground, their mating rituals, how they protect their young, its so beautiful. Its like a dance, poetry in motion.

Credits to the producers, I wonder how they manage to do it in such extreme temperatures. I can't even stand the cold in Calgary, much less the Antartica.

Updates

At the final minute, decided to drop my Computer Architecture Module, so I'm left with 5 modules. That module too tedious already lor, not really very hard, but need to go lab everyday to do the CPU, very troublesome and time consuming. In the end, only map to a 3 MC module.

So decided to allow myself more time to enjoy here, and drop the module. This will waste 3MCs of S/U cos next year, I will be left with all core modules. Very siong, 1 breadth, 4 depths, 2001, 2011, and FYP. I think next year I will be stuck in school all the way liao. Good la, can save money.

With 5 modules, my timetable is much improved, though I still have to wake up early in the morning everyday!! Sigh, at least afternoon can go back sleep.

Now, Jiali should drop her very very siong 2001, and take with me next year! Anyone else want to drop 2001 should carry on. SEP is for enjoying, don't push yourselves too much! lalala

Of Ice Skating and Basketball

On Friday night, went ice skating at the Olympic Oval in campus. Wow, its not the usual skating rink, it’s a skating TRACK! Inside the track is 2 rinks, which are for ice hockey trainings.

Rented speed skates accidentally, instead of the usual hockey skates. Speed skates are longer, and supposedly makes one skate faster. However, I am not used to it at all. The first 1 or 2 rounds is for getting used to the skates (and for falling). After that however, managed to get the hang of it. Hopefully at the end of my exchange, I will return to Singapore a pro skater!

After skating, went to see a basketball match, University of Calgary, “Dinos” vs University of Alberta, “Golden Bears”. Missed the female match and the first half of the male match. The atmosphere was great! The university basketball team is like the city’s team, with sooo many outsiders coming to support. Plus they have to pay to get in! Nice culture. There are commentators, mascots, popcorns etc, very cool! In Singapore, nobody cares about IVP matches. Even though there are many supporters during IHG, the standard of the competition is not as professional as here.

Lots of freebies are given away during the time outs. The Dinos mascot will run out during such timeouts and throw various freebies to the spectators. Some freebies include pizzas, basketballs(mini), t shirts and Dino soft toys. The audience (mostly kids) is more excited during time outs than during the match itself! Haha

Only gripe I have with the basketball match is that there are no cheerleaders! During halftime, they just have some lame guy dancing to the gay YMCA song. There should be some significance about this, cause the spectators were cheering quite wildly for that guy.

Next day, went on a tour organized by ISC (international Student Centre).
Tae Kwon Do lesson, followed by a
talk/dance/story telling by a First Nation Native,
Chinatown tour and finally
Salsa lesson.

Sounds rather boring, but its actually quite fun and informative. I even learnt a few things about geomancy from the Chinatown tour!

At night, MZ and I went for round 2 of the basketball match. This time, we went early and got some pop corns.

Saw the halftime show, and nope, still no cheerleaders. Instead, they had a 3-point shooting competition. After that, there was a primary school basketball exhibition match during the break! Quite interesting, even the referee is a kid. After the match though, the lame YMCA guy came back on and did his dance. What kind of tradition is this?!

In the end, Dinos lost their first game, and won the second. I do not know where their current standing is.

Dilemma

Accounting 301 requires a textbook that costs 130 CAD. And the book is published by the lecturer for this module. Don't think I will be able to get the book anywhere else. Sigh, is it worth it to invest 130 bucks on a UEM?

First day of school

Just finished my first day of school

Getting more stressed.
They don't give notes, so need to take down notes. I checked the prices of notebooks here, at least 7 CAD, freaking ex la!!

They use blackboards and OHPs here. Quite cool, the blackboards can slide around one.
[from the pic, can see that among the heads of guys, there's only 1 gal, this is even worse than Singapore!]

This week is ENGG week. Can see first year students running around with cool costumes and shouting. Very happening. They even crash into lectures and ask the lecturers for signatures, getting much attention from the seniors attending the lecture.

Later tonight, going to Science Theatre to watch 40 year old virgin. The student union here shows movies every Monday for free. Popcorns are at 2 dollars, and I think they are all-you-can-eat. Seems like the student union here is much more active than in NUS.

Other services provided by the student union include the Bound and Copied, which helps resell used textbooks, similar to IES's Old Book Sales, except that the shop is permanent and they charge a commission of 25%.

Their diary, Daytimer, contains a lot of coupons and vouchers for stalls around campus and nearby. The quality of the paper used is also better than that of NUS's diary.

School's starting tomorrow, my timetable here is much worse than back in NUS, for only 20 MCs. Sigh, hope can pass.
Behold, my Death Timetable!

Public Skating Rink

On New Year's Day, we went to skate at a public skating rink at Downtown.

Not bad, they rent out skates for free, to anyone! Even foreigners like us, with no home, no phone, no ID, they also let us have skates.

View of the skating rink from Calgary Tower

This is the truck that rents out the skates. The guy on the right is returning his skates.

For some reason, its much harder to skate here. Maybe the skates are lousy, or the rink not as good, but I find it very hard to balance here. Of course, I am a noob at skating also.

Still, noobie me managed to "coach" MZ and SY until they quite pro, at least can stand up, haha
Theres a skating rink in the University, maybe I will train there and become a pro skater!

Downtown on NYE part 2

Theres a great park in Chinatown called "Sien Lok Park".

Its a very beautiful park, making this Chinatown different from the usual crowded, dirty, sleazy Chinatowns elsewhere.

The water in the rivers are so clear!

After that, we went to Eau Claire Mall to have a look. Was too cold and tired from hanging around the park, so did not really take any pictures there. Its the first mall we saw that has a cinema and an arcade. Somehow, most people who hang out at the arcade are Asians.

Near night fall, went back to the Calgary Tower to see the night lights of Calgary. Took a lot of pictures, but most were blur. For more pictures, please go to myphotoalbum.

Wanted to go to the pubs to celebrate NYE, but it had been a busy and tiring day so we decided to go back and celebrate in the comforts of our home, just like the Canadians. There's a pizza parlour near our place, so we bought a Hawaiian Pizza there and some chicken wings.

The coke was bought long ago in Coop, for only 99cents! As we don't have enough cups, SY drank from her bowl. The food sucked :p

Day 4 - downtown on NYE Part 1

Decided to go downtown during New Year's Eve to see how Canadians celebrate. In the end, the whole place is quiet and boring.

I guess they simply celebrate at home (can smell barbeques while walking home that night) or go to pubs for a drink (intended to go 17th Ave to take a look but in the end decided not to).

At downtown, we took a look at the "famous" Calgary Tower.

Not very tall, 525 feet. In fact, there's a building across from the tower which is taller! But I think this building has significant history, since its used as a torch for the 1988 Olympic Games. Well, it appears that the interesting thing in Calgary is its history. Presently, there's nothing really special about it.

MZ and SY seem very happy about being on top of the tower though. Non-stop photo taking from them. (Actually, I believe I took more photos than them, I even so boliao as to take their pictures :p)

Brave me sticks my body out of the tower. A little bit more and down I fall.

After that, we walked to Chinatown. Actually, its quite small, nothing much to see also. Most people are inside the shopping centres (There are 2 big ones) and they are mostly Chinese and Vietnamese.
Far East Shopping Centre has a branch in Canada.

Had lunch there, but theres nothing special. Not nice, and expensive, as is all the food we had eaten so far.

Day 3 - To Nothhill Mall

Brentwood Mall is easy to go as its just a straight route. Northhill Mall is slightly more complicated. To further complicate things, we decide to go from the back door, just for the heck of it. Managed to take some nice pics though.

This house is the back of my house. Yea, poorly taken shot, but cold mah, hee

There's another Safeway here. This one is much bigger than the one in Brentwood. The corn flakes are much bigger too. I think I will be eating cornflakes for breakfast all the way liao. Cause they are quite cheap, especially if I buy the JUMBO pack such as the one SY was carrying. Its 1.3kg lor. 1.3kg of cereals is no joke.

Anyway, noticed that a good indication of whether a shop is suitable for poor Asians like me, is to see if there are any poor Asians/Blacks inside or not. And the Sears here is full of Asians and Blacks. Nice!

Found a table ice hockey in Sears. No foozball tables here, their national sport is ice hockey! Soccer what?

Sears is so big that there is a need for 2 storeys. The people here are really not used to high rise buildings. Saw an auntie (around 40 years of age) being scared of taking the escalator. Shes like hesitating at the edge of the escalator and when shes on it, she held on the the railing tightly.

And she's not the only one. The next day, I saw another middle aged woman hesitating at another escalator in Downtown Calgary. Never knew that in this modern era, there are still people who are afraid of escalators.

Day 2 - Visit to Brentwood Mall

Brentwood mall is the nearest mall to Morley Trail. Hence, we walked there to stock up on our supplies.

Its our first day out, and we were freezing to death! Still, its very beautiful and the sights are enough to keep me going!

At last, after walking for around 15 min, we saw signs of shops. Their malls are super big, and usually only single-storeyed. This also means that we need to walk a lot. If there are many storeys, we can take the elevator/escalator to our desired levels. Here, we will need to walk.

There are 3 megamalls in Brentwood. They are London Drugs, Safeway and Coop. Safeway is the recommended supermarket to shop in for groceries. However, our impression is that Coop stuffs are cheaper, hence we bought our groceries from there. I also bought a 17 bucks pillow from Coop (the next day, found much cheaper pillows around)

For lunch, we had buffet at this Chinese restaurant. Its 8.50, but after taxes, it adds up to 10 bucks. Still, its quite cheap since most meals in Calgary are around 10 bucks. Sigh, the food sucks, when it claims to be the best in Canada. Extremely salty, dunno whether its salt or msg. Maybe its just the buffet standard not that good, the ala carte stuffs might be nicer, but too ex for me to try.

For dinner, we cooked pasta with alfredo sauce. Delicious and cheap! Actually, MZ and SY cooked, I just ate. Yeah, my cooking skills suck. But don't say I live off them, I am their scout (map reader/pathfinder) lor. I think we will get lost sooner or later =P

Settled

In my room now.

Cannot connect through the lan point, need to register. However, I can connect to their wireless network. However, the connection is super unstable, every few minutes will disconnect. Plus its damn slow. Sigh, maybe should have stayed at Morley Trail all the way.. haha

Food here is Ex, at least 5 CAD a meal, and that is the very minimum, unless I eat donuts all the way. Yes, the donuts here are quite cheap, those super fattening type only sell for around 50 cents to a dollar.

However, the most expensive things has to be the washing machine. Small small washing machine but need 1.50 lor! And the dryer needs another 1.50! To think that I was complaining that the dryer in KE7 needs 20 cents..

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!

Now I'm packing my stuffs, moving to the University apartment tomorrow morning. Hopefully there are no cockups. I wonder why they have no holidays tomorrow. If I go there and the offices are closed ah, gonna kill them!!

Past few days had been fun!

Dec 29, went to nearby mall, Brentwood Mall

Dec 30, went to another nearby mall, Northhill Mall

Dec 31, went Downtown Calgary, including Chinatown, Calgary Tower and much more!

Jan 1, went for free ice skating in Downtown Calgary! Yep, there are public skating rinks here, and the kind government rents out skates for free! However, either they are very trusting, or very stupid, cause they don't really monitor who they rent out the skates to. Hence, many skates had been stolen. In fact, the renter told me size 11 skates are all stolen when I asked for a pair.. But still, its damn nice of them to do such a thing. If this was in Singapore, I guess all the skates would have been stolen from the first day (but the organisers in Singapore would never be so trusting)

Anyway, no time to blog much, hope got mood to update on my previous explorations next time!
